Previsualization / Animations
Pre-visualization (“previz”) is the first part of
Preproduction. This includes models, storyboards, and animatics
that are used to direct the overall production and sets the look
and feel of the animation to all those involved.
Animatics create a basic 2d moving storyboard. Most animatics
use simple versions of the characters with minimal backgrounds to
get a starting sense for the story and timing. Elements may not
be placed exactly, and instead of key visuals, markers will sometimes
be used to represent objects. Think of an animatic as a rough draft
of the final project. Animatics are reviewed, modified, and then
submitted for approval before production of the project can begin.
We create a more complex version, called a storyline animatic.
We look at the interaction of all the visual elements to get a directorial
control on the timing and story. Elements are placed exactly where
they will appear in the story timeline. We then use this as a visual
workbook and add the finished elements as they are completed. This
allows us to make directorial changes earlier, saving time and money.
We get a quicker sense whether a scene is going to work or needs
to be modified.
